Make sure you’ll try the pa'amb oli on Mallorca

Posted: Thursday, 29th September 2022

Foodies flock to Mallorca for its flavor-packed fare and rich local produce. But you don’t need to be a die-hard foodie to appreciate the incredible flavours of traditional Mallorcan food. You simply cannot pass up pa’amb oli.

Mallorcan pa’amb oli is a traditional creation of garlic, tomato and olive oil. Most recipes also throw in for instance Jamon Serrano (cured ham), cheese, or salted dried cod for good measure too. Take dense slices of toasted brown traditional bread. Rub each side with fresh garlic then fresh tomato, allowing a dollop of pulp to settle on the bread. Drizzle fresh extra virgin olive oil over the ensemble and there you have it – basic pa’amb oli with a taste that is anything but basic. Don’t forget to add a dash of salt just to heighten the flavours even more.

Now sure you could try your hand at making traditional Mallorcan pa’amb oli. Especially while you are visiting Mallorca and can lay your hands on fresh local tomatoes, garlic, olive oil and salt. But if you prefer to soak up traditional fare without taking to the kitchen yourself, you’ll have plenty of opportunity. Pa’amb oli is served across Mallorca as a popular snack. One fantastic place to sample several variations of traditional pa’amb oli is in sunny Soller for instance, a small traditional town in the mountains.

•    Can Quatre: nestled in the towering Tramuntana ranges with a glass restaurant turning on both striking views and freshest local cuisine

•    Ca’s Xorc: stay in a traditional country hotel packed with modern comforts plus a unique dining experience set around the old mill stone of an antique olive press

•    Cal Bisbe: previously an old olive oil factory, imagine how many servings of pa’amb oli the grounds of Cal Bisbe have contributed too. Today you can still enjoy imaginative Mallorcan and Mediterranean fare here.
