Valldemossa: A Village Guide Beyond the Chopin Cell

Valldemossa sits about 400 metres up in the Serra de Tramuntana, half an hour's drive from Palma. It's easy to treat it as a quick stop: see the monastery, buy a pastry, leave. Stay a night or two and a different village appears. Once the coaches have gone, the stone lanes go quiet and the swallows take over the square.

The Royal Charterhouse. The Cartuja is why most people come. Frédéric Chopin and George Sand spent the damp winter of 1838–39 in its cells. Sand later turned that winter into her rather grumpy book A Winter in Majorca. Beyond the Chopin rooms, look for the old monks' pharmacy and the cloister garden. In summer, the monastery hosts a Chopin festival. Our tip: arrive at opening time or late in the afternoon, when the day-trippers have thinned out.

Mallorca's own saint. Santa Catalina Thomàs was born here in 1531 and is Mallorca's only saint. Almost every house has a painted tile by the door asking for her protection. Spotting them becomes a game as you wander. Her birthplace, a small shrine, is tucked into the lanes near the church.

Coca de patata. Valldemossa's sweet contribution is the coca de patata, a soft, sugar-dusted potato bun. Locals eat it with hot chocolate. It's at its best mid-morning, still warm.

Beyond the village. The coast road towards Deià passes some of Mallorca's most romantic spots:

• Miramar, where Ramon Llull founded a school of languages in 1276. Archduke Ludwig Salvator later made it his home.
• Son Marroig, the Archduke's house, which looks down on Sa Foradada, a rocky headland pierced by a huge natural hole. Sunset there is unforgettable.

For drama, take the corkscrew road down to Port de Valldemossa (see our guide Scenic drives Mallorca: Port Valldemossa). Experienced walkers can tackle the Camí de s'Arxiduc, a ridge path the Archduke built for the views.

When to go. Spring and autumn are ideal. It's mild enough for walking, and the village feels like it belongs to its residents again. Sunday is market day.
