Serra de Tramuntana: heritage listed
The stunning mountainous lanscape of Serra de Tramuntana was recently listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in Paris. It was one of only six sites across the world that was awarded this prestigious honour.
Majorca’s Socialist party nominated the area in 2010 after getting more than 40,000 people to sign a petition, including members of the Spanish royal family and other influential people.
It is expected that Majorca will benefit greatly from this heritage listing as the positive publicity will boost tourism. Maria Salom, the new President of the Council of Majorca, believes it will attract more visitors during non-peak seasons.
