Fiesta of the black pudding (Butifarró), Sant Joan

Posted: Sunday, 18th September 2011

On the first Sunday of October, the fiesta of ‘Torrada d’es Butifarró’ or Fiesta of the Black Pudding is held in Sant Joan on the island of Majorca where slices of pork and sobrassada (pictured above) are roasted on BBQ pits.

Sobrassada is a raw, cured sausage made with ground pork, paprika, salt and other spices. Sobrassada, along with butifarró are traditional Majorcan sausage meat products prepared during the festival that marks the autumn and winter pig slaughter in Majorca.

The festival is well received by the community and cups are awarded for the best Butiffaró. Plus there is plenty of dancing to traditional local music and local arts and crafts for sale.
