Cycling tips for Mallorca
Exploring the beautiful island of Majorca is made even better when viewed from a bicycle. Feeling the wind on your skin and breathing in the fresh ocean and mountain air is an extremely enjoyable experience.
However, there are definitely some precautions that must be taken, and these may differ to the issues that may arise in your own country. Let’s take a look at some of the things to look out for:
- Try to keep to the shoulder of the roads whenever possible as this is the safest place for cyclists. Align in single file if you are travelling with others to avoid taking up too much space and blocking other vehicles that will be moving much more quickly.
- If travelling alone, be sure to let the hotel staff know that you are going to explore the island on a bike. If you get into trouble and don’t return they can send someone to look for you. It’s also a good idea to do this if there are a few of you who are inexperienced cyclists that are going on a long trip.
- The Summer months can get extremely hot. Remember to take sunscreen, a hat, plenty of water and cycle outside the hottest middle part of the day.
- If you are unsure whether you are on private or public property, then take the time to ask. There are serious laws against trespassing.
- Pay particular attention whilst cycling through the road tunnels in the Tramuntana Mountains as they are not well lit. It is strongly advisable to take additional lighting with you.
Lastly, as with any natural landscape, respect the environment and take your litter with you. If you would like to continue holidaying in Majorca and enjoying its stunning beauty then take good care of it while you are there. Happy cycling!
